Stoke Dream Team, (must have seen players play), - Part 2 - Right Midfield
Stoke Dream Team, (must have seen players play), - Part 2 - Right Midfield
Following on from Part 1 - The Goalkeeper and Defence, now it is time for the midfield.
As stated in the previous blog, I have chosen the 4-4-2 formation, so now its time for the midfield, and for now right midfield
.
Mark Chamberlain - my first Stoke City hero, Chambo was everything you would ever want from a winger, he was quick, direct, skilfull, with an eye for a goal. In my first ever game I went v Luton, Chamberlain, was just electric, he glided past full backs, put in 2 inch perfect crosses for goals, and contributed everything during the game. He went on to play for England, while at Stoke, scoring on his debut. Unfortunately for Chambo, his England career was only to reach 8 caps, (he was the other winger the day John Barnes scored that goal at the Maracana stadium, at the time Chamberlain was the better prospect). Unfortunately after the holocaust season Chamberlain, was sold to Sheffield Wednesday (I was gutted that day). Chamberlain stats at Stoke were played 111 scoring 17 goals, an impressive record for a winger.
Philip Heath - was another local lad, he came into the team, as a promising youngster duiring the holocaust season, he spent a few years at Stoke, during the rebuilding time, to the better times. Heathy was a competitor, with a decent turn of pace, direct and an eye for a goal. He was later to be sold on to Oxford. A good player his record at Stoke was played 156 scoring 16 goals.
Tony Ford - was the next cab off the rank. Fordy was an experienced player, who we signed from Grimsby, after he had made 355 appearances for them. Fordy played 112 games in 3 years, playing in every position but goalkeeper. He was solid reliable, and was a big player during the 86-87 play off push. With a record of 112 games 13 goals. He was a good performer, he went on to play 931 games in his career before retiring at 42, he later went on to earn an MBE.
Kevin Keen - Keeno, was signed from Wolves, in 1994, after having a good record at West ham, prior to this. He was a hard working pro, with a tremendous work rate, and no lack of skill, he stayed at Stoke for 7 seasons, and was a player of the year during this time. He played 176 games for the potters scoring 10 goals including the following https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mWztjQDKAsg
Bjarni Gudjonsson @Bjarnigudjons - Bjarni, was signed by his father Gudjon Thordarson, from Icelandic football, never knowing what to expect (at that time we signed a lot of Icelandic internationals). Bjarni, was skilfull, a fantastic crosser of the ball, and chipping in with a few goals. Bjarni played 132 games scoring 12 goals, and became a true fan favourite.
Liam Lawrence - Signed from Sunderland (he had been his clubs top scorer in the premier league), Lenny was an exciting signing. Hard working, skilfull, with an eye to goal, Lenny had everything, he became a key member of the team in the promotion season. During the promotion season he scored 15 goals, including this blinder at Ipswich https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E56oAfu-nlg . After the promotion season, he went on to score in the premier league home game v Aston Villa, and scored a blinder v Hull https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjKsso9z5g8, a goal which was integral to keeping Stoke up. Unfortunately he fell out of favour with the manager (after a bizarre injuring involving his dog). With 125 games and 24 goals, Lenny was a true Stoke Legend.
Jermaine Pennant @pennant83 - The next premier league player to grace stoke on the right wing, was Jermaine Pennant. Pennant came as a player with good talent but an interesting reputation, he had played at the top level, and after being on loan from Zaragoza, he was signed permanently (his signing on fee, just about paid for his parking fines http://metro.co.uk/2011/02/14/jermaine-pennant-i-deliberately-left-my-porsche-at-train-station-for-months-638810/. Pennant was quick, attacking, direct, a fantastic crosser of the ball, and a player who was fantastic in the semi final of fa cup v Bolton. Pennant will be remembered fondly at Stoke.
Others included are John Walters (he playes everywhere), and Xherdan Shaqiri (this guy could be amazing).
However I have to pick 1 midfield, the player I have chosen is ....... Mark Chamberlain so the team so far is.
